blowing me off like a super star… holy shit. How not to interview someone: Call the interviewee in middle of the business day Don’t call the interviewee during the accepted appointment time due to doubts of them being available. (after only calling at the worst possible times) Don’t send an email to the interviewee, send an email to their references asking why the aren’t...

Transitioning out of a job is weird. It’s not the knowledge that people want to make sure they take away before it is lost, it is the ‘do’-ing that people want transitioned. And, even the new do-ers, seem uninterested in walking through how the old do-er did it at anything other than a super high level. But, maybe the knowledge is the best part; If i could write a...

I’m on my fourth adventure writing pagination code for a non-sequential set of more than 30 million records. ClusteredPagedListHolder evolved into SmartPagedListHolder which evolved into SmarterPagedListHolder which has now turned into EvenSmarterPagedListHolder. I don’t think I’m chasing my tail here.. and, it does work, getting to page 79,000, remembering your place, and...

I disagree with all of your requirements. You are misunderstanding how computers work, and are far from my target user. I will make magic flags in the code that disable your rules at my convenience.

Comment out all the working JavaScript, add some alert statements of static strings, add logging to the application that throws exceptions, breaks features; commit the code, head home.

Using micro-instances instead of deploying lots of JVMs on a single Large instance, is working out quite well. Easier for me to manage and monitor. Performing at nearly the same scale with 16 micros vs 4 larges with 4 deployments each.

Oh Hi Mr. Developer, I see you’re trying to run a job that will run for about 100 hours. Now is the perfect time to introduce you to my default encoding, which is nothing like you expect; I’d be happy to silently inflict pain on you through the form of malformed text in about 1 percent of all your data..

How much of my life has been wasted on waiting for games to start on my playstation3. Really, battlefield 3, it takes a full minute before you can show me the menu? How about you show me that menu first, and then you show me who sponsored the game WHILE THE GAME IS ACTUALLY LOADING.

97 floor boards with dents/scratches on a brand new house = fail. Telling the delivery guy to not bother bringing a washing machine already dented in their warehouse = kinda win. Waiting for them to find me another one. Hung my first window treatment this morning too.. mad success; cut is perfect, almost no gap around the blinds.

Struggling to connect my practical experience with a fundamental big-o question. Or, how to fail at interviewing. Sometimes picking the asymptotically inferior algorithm works better than one that can’t be restarted after your server topples over. *sigh*

In fact, I’m guilty of the same practice, emailing support for documentation to do X, rather than just asking “Can you do X for me?” or “Do you have any ideas on how I can achieve X” Sometimes stepping away from the technical role, and letting the service providers provide service is difficult.

Sorry if I’m misunderstanding, but, A news organization hacks into phones and all shit breaks loose, a government runs ECHELON and that is fine? I don’t have any assumption of privacy when talking on the phone or leaving voicemails… is that even the controversy?
